HAVANA, May 29 (www.cubanet.org) - The remodeling of the Miramar hotel, in
Guanabo beach, east of Havana, already two years underway and no end in sight,
is making employees despair they'll get their jobs back any time soon.
The three-story, 23-room hotel has a long, varied history. The government
confiscated it 40 years ago from its Cuban owner, operated it for a few years,
and shuttered it for many more. Then it was turned into workers' housing, until
more recently, when it was refurbished and made into a hotel once more to
capitalize on the tourism boom of the 90s.
Now it's being remodeled again.
"The government has made a substantial investment in money and
materials, two years have gone by, and the tourism managers say they haven't
been able to finish for lack of resources. How can that be if the State is the
owner of all the resources, including ourselves?" said one worker who asked
to remain anonymous.
To help defray salary and some other expenses, the Ministry of Tourism has
kept open the hotel's pool, a snack bar, a store, and a pizza and Chinese food
restaurant.
