SANTA CLARA, January 30 (Omar Ruiz, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) -
Elections official Zenaida Otero assaulted independent journalist María
Elena Alpízar as she took notes outside a polling precinct in Placetas,
Villa Clara province, during the elections January 19.
Alpízar was copying information posted outside the polling place as
the voting for seats in the National Assembly of the Popular Power took place
inside, when Otero wrested the notebook from her hands and shoved her as she
insulted her.
Otero, who is the president of Electoral College 28-3, told the journalist
she had no right to write down the information. She was aided in the assault by
her niece, Miriam González.
Alpízar later went to the Popular Power headquarters in Placetas to
lodge a complaint. Odalys Paz, of the Department of Citizens Service,
heard her complaint, and asked her: "If these were your elections, would
you like us to question them?"
