Police confuse husband for harasser and beat him

HAVANA, September 18 (Victor M. Dominguez, Lux Info Press/www.cubanet.org) – Two police officers were seen beating a man with dreadlocks whom they believed was harassing a foreign tourist.

The incident took place in front of the National Capitol. The policemen apparently confused the man with someone involved in prostitution. It turned out the couple were husband and wife.

The woman took out her passport and showed it to police. "We’re married," she told them. "We live in Europe."

In an unrelated incident, a gang beat a pair of lovers September 14 in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality in Havana. One of the gang members threw a brick through the windshield of the car they were driving, forcing it to a halt.

"These violent acts happen often in this area because of the alcohol and drug use there," commented Magalis Felipe, who lives in Arroyo Naranjo.
