Primary school leaks after repairs

GÜINES, September 11 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - The roof at the "José Martí" primary school leaks in spite of its having undergone repairs during the summer.

When provincial first secretary of the Communist Party, Pedro Saenz Montejo, inaugurated the school September 6, he criticized the shoddy repairs, although he called the workers’ performance a "colossal effort".

The school was under repairs for two-and-a-half months, but a few days into the school year, the ceiling already shows water stains.

"These were not quality repairs due to the lack of time and to the pilfering of construction materials, which are taken by the workers who need them to repair their own homes or to sell," said Miguel Galbán, president of the Engineers and Architects Association.

Several neighbors said they could see people taking materials at night when the school was being repaired.

"I needed four wheelbarrows full of sand and was able to buy them from the workers at 10 pesos each. They also sold me three sacks of cement at 100 pesos each. Everything was for sale, tiles, sand, rebar, cement, paint, electric wire," said a resident.
