HAVANA, September 6 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) - More
than 500 Catholics in La Fe, a small town in the Isle of Youth, south of Havana,
signed a letter to the government asking that their church, taken over by the
local government during a hurricane emergency in 1995, be given back to them.
Local authorities back then designated the church a hurricane shelter, but
instead of returning the building after the danger passed, installed the local
cultural activities center in it.
Since then, local Catholics have worshipped in a private home.
"Last year, an Italian bishop came by the Isle of Youth and made a
substantial donation to the government for the construction of a cultural
activities center. Local officials ordered that construction be started, but it
has since been paralyzed and there is no solution in sight," said one
Catholic source who asked not to be identified.
