PLACETAS, October 15 (María Elena Alpízar, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - The only bridge connecting the small town of Juan Francisco,
in Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus province, to the outside world was washed
out by the rains four months ago, and its 600 residents have been isolated since
then.
The bridge spanned a stream called La Lechuga, and was a link on the only
road into town.
Lately, residents bring food and other supplies in by forming a bucket
brigade to hand things over the stream. Although there are a doctor and a
polyclinic in town, patients have had to ford the stream and be transported on
horseback to the nearest hospital 17 kilometers (about 10 miles) distant.
The problem is worst during the wet season, which ends in December.
