GÜINES, October 9 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Baseball fans in Güines, a town south of Havana, support
Cuban baseball star José Contreras decision to seek asylum in
Mexico.
Contreras, 30, is considered the best Cuban pitcher of his time. He is best
known for victories against the Baltimore Orioles in 1999, and against the
Japanese in the world championship last year in Taiwan.
Emilio González, a fan, said: "Contreras took the right path,
because in the Major Leagues he will be a star. He will earn there what he could
never dream of having here."
Another fan, Raudel Mirabal, said Contreras defection was a hard blow
for the government, which has seen dozens of players leave because sports
figures in Cuba are dispossessed of most of the money they earn in foreign
events.
Contreras asked for asylum in Mexico October 2, along with sports
administrator Miguel Valdés. They were part of the Cuban delegation that
was participating in a tournament in Mexico.
