Cuba beats U.S. to win Americas Series title

MONTERREY, Mexico - Cuba crushed an overmatched U.S. squad 6-1 Tuesday to win the Americas Series baseball tournament with a perfect 10-0 record.

Mael Rodriguez struck out 13 for Cuba (10-0) and was backed by 11 hits. He pitched 8 2-3 innings, giving up six hits, six walks and one earned run.

The Americans (6-5) scored with two outs in the ninth on Brian Ward's RBI single. Cuba's Pedro Lazo entered and recorded the final out.

U.S. starter Tim Kester took the loss. He yielded five hits, four runs and one walk in five innings.

The U.S. team was made up of independent players and free agents. The Americans have qualified for the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Earlier, the Dominican Republic defeated Panama 6-0 for third place, and Mexico beat Venezuela 5-4 for fifth place.
