HAVANA, October 4 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro) - A poll of 720
residents in the city Havana and surrounding province showed that 100 per cent
of those surveyed favored a plebiscite on Cuba's future supervised by
international observers.
As for a recent plebiscite carried out by the government that gave
overwhelming support to enshrining the socialist system in the Constitution, 98
per cent said they did not find the result credible.
Miguel Galbán, president of the Cuba Commission that carried out the
polling, told Grupo Decoro: "This consultation shows the wishes of the
Cuban people because those who participated could express themselves freely,
without fearing informers, agents of the political police or members of the
Communist Party."
The poll also showed that 100 per cent of those polled felt the government
was responsible for the economic crisis affecting Cuba.
Sixty per cent said they voted in the government's Popular Power plebiscite
out of fear of being of being denounced for not doing so.
The polling was carried out in Havana, Diez de Octubre, Arroyo Naranjo, Güines,
Madruga, San José de las Lajas and San Nicolás de Bari.
