HAVANA, November 26 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - An
independent library was recently inaugurated in Guantánamo, eastern Cuba,
said the provincial coordinator of the Independent Libraries Project, Isabel Córdoba.
The new library will be called Alexandria, in remembrance of the library at
Alexandria, Egypt, reputed to be one of the wonders of the ancient world.
The new librarys director, José Álvarez Frómeta,
said the new library joins others in the province.
The Independent Libraries movement has founded close to 100 libraries in the
island since its inception, in spite of police harassment and routine
confiscation of donated books by the Cuban Customs Service.
