HAVANA, November 25 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén / www.cubanet.org) -
Seventh Day Adventists in the town of Jatibonico must travel anywhere between 20
and 50 miles to attend religious services in the provincial capital of Sancti Spíritus
since the local government banned worship in their pastors home.
The pastor, José Manuel Hernández, has been building a house
and added some square footage to accommodate his flock. The director of the
municipal Housing Authority, Dioel Suárez, found the structure exceeded
the dimensions shown in the plans that had been filed with the authority, and
has threatened to confiscate the house.
"I never imagined that increasing the size of the house a little bit to
include the assembly hall would be so serious. Even on private land. I thought a
fine, as is usual, would have taken care of it," said Hernández.
Hernández pointed out that there is no other Adventist facility in
Jatibonico, and said: "It could be the government doesnt want us to
have a meeting facility. Now we have to travel to Sancti Spíritus,
precisely at a time when transportation is very hard to come by."
