The Bonita Vista High School football team may play its opening game next
year in Havana, 10News reported.
Baron's head coach, Carl Parrick, is pushing for the international game. He
lived in the country as a youngster while his dad was with the Navy.
Parrick said he was in seventh grade when Fidel Castro (news - web sites)
took over Cuba.
"We had to flee one morning at 2 a.m.," Parrick said.
Parrick has traveled with the football team many times before, to places
such as Hawaii, Arizona and Las Vegas.
He said travel gives the players a chance to learn a little more then just
on the field. He believes Cuba would be an incredible learning destination.
"They read about Bay of Pigs, Castro and the city of Havana. Now, maybe
they will get firsthand experience," Parrick said.
The State Department and the school board has given its approval for the
trip, according to 10News. Now, the team must raise $80.000.
"We'll all do something to make it happen the coaches and staff
-- all be helping out," Perrick said.
This would not be the first time an American team went to play in Cuba. The
Baltimore Orioles played against the Cuban all-star baseball squad in 1999. |
