PINAR DEL RIO, November 22 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - The emergency medical system in the provincial capital of
Pinar del Río has been without ambulance service for three months due to
lack of spare parts for the two ambulances, yet identical vehicles belonging to
other government organizations are in service. Dr. Sergio Ríos said that
for over a year now emergency medical transport in the city has been iffy, but
that in June it completely collapsed. Dr. Ríos said more than 170,000
area residents depend on the service.
"Patients' relatives have to find a way of transporting them,"
said Ríos.
The out-of-commission ambulances are Italian-made Fiats. The official in
charge of medical emergency service, a Dr. Miñoso, has a Fiat that's
identical to the ambulances, and the telephone company, ETECSA, has several
Fiats of the same type. Those are all in service.
