HAVANA, November 21 (Ernesto Roque, CPI / www.cubanet.org) - Despite a
display of force called spectacular by residents, police in Güines, a town
south of Havana, have not been able to find cattle rustlers who struck again
yesterday, slaughtering a cow belonging to the Animal Science Institute.
Police and local officials aided by dogs spread through Güines
yesterday and even interrogated several people who had been in prison
previously, but have nothing to show for their efforts so far.
The incident was the second in less than two weeks at the Institute, which
is closely guarded 24 hours a day.
"The odd thing is, the watchmen have portable radios, firearms,
flashlights, horses and bicycles to patrol the premises. How is it possible that
someone could slaughter a cow?" said one resident.
The illegal slaughter of farm animals has been an ongoing problem in Cuba
where beef is in extremely short supply and is almost unobtainable for ordinary
Cubans.
