GÜINES, November 12 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Administrators at the Piti Fajardo maternity hospital in Güines,
Havana province, banned all family members from staying with patients after
visiting hours starting October 22, reportedly because a dangerous virus has
been detected at the facility, although no specifics as to its nature have been
released.
The hospital is now under an epidemiological alert, according to a medical
source who did not want his name printed.
The hospital takes in patients from five municipalities, with about 150,000
population, and has one of the highest infant mortality rates of all Ministry of
Public Health facilities, according to independent analysts.
The ban on family constitutes a hardship on patients because in Cuba many
nursing functions are traditionally performed by family members, even in
hospitals.
Güines resident Maritza Hernández, whose daughter is a patient
said: "Our daughters need us to bathe and to clean up. Many of the patients
have had surgery, and if they fall down, it could be dangerous."
Patient Miriam Domínguez, who recently had surgery, was upset that
she couldnt have family help, because she said she requires someone to
help her just to go to the bathroom.
