PINAR DEL RIO, November 4 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Members from various dissident organizations of the province
of Pinar del Río sent an open letter to Fidel Castro, wherein they asked
him to decree amnesty for all Cuban political prisoners.
The signatories of the letter bring attention to the political prisoners
Leonardo Bruzón Ávila, Juan Carlos González Leiva (who is
blind) and Emilio Leyva Pérez, to whom arbitrary measures of imprisonment
are applied, which is the cause of their conduct of protest (such as hunger
strikes) well aware that their lives are in danger.
The principal directors of the news bulletin El Pinareño, of the
Human Rights Foundation 20th of May, of the ecologist association NATURPAZ and
of the independent library San Isidro, organizations that have their
headquarters in the municipality of Sandino, signed the open letter delivered to
Castro.
In their letter, the dissidents reminded the Cuban government that
approximately half a century ago he organized and executed an armed assault
against military barracks (el Moncada), an act for which he was not denied the
opportunity of freely expressing himself, defending himself, and for which he
received a sentence which was not severe. Shortly thereafter, when he had not
even served one-third of his sentence, he was granted amnesty.
The signatories of the letter manifested that today hundreds of Cubans are
imprisoned for thinking, having an opinion or associating, and suggest that
Castro analyze his own history, reflect on it, and once and for all, permit Cuba
to move towards democracy.
