CABAÑAS, November 5 (Moisés L. Rodríguez, Grupo Decoro
/ www.cubanet.org) - The ecosystem of La Herradura beach, in northeast Havana
province, has been under siege for years; a victim of an invasive foreign
species of plant and of sand subtraction by people who use it for construction.
The abundant casuarina or Australian pine, not a true pine, sheds leaves
which react with the sand to form a muddy substance.
What sand is left is routinely extracted by people who cart it away to use
it for construction.
