More than half the buses out of service in the Isle of Youth

NUEVA GERONA, November 1 (Carlos Serpa Maceira, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - Seventeen of 29 available municipal buses are out of service for lack of spare parts in the Isle of Youth.

The parts needed, primarily air pumps, starters, batteries and tires, are just not being supplied by central authorities, said a source who works in transportation.

Recently three Fiat buses were brought in from the Madruga depot, in the mainland, to beef up service in the island until January 2003. The other buses that normally service the Isle of Youth are also Fiats, imported from Italy.

Transportation authorities have shuffled schedules in an attempt to make do with their 12 buses and the three reinforcements, but residents, especially those in outlying districts, complain that service is not sufficient, since they have to travel to the capital, Nueva Gerona, for such services as medical attention.
