Government to impose public service sentences

HAVANA, October 31 (Ana Leonor Díaz, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - The Cuban government is seeking to reduce the penal population in the island by imposing public service sentences.

A source in the Supreme Court said most prisoners range from 18 to 30 years of age, and that many are serving long sentences that have no bearing to the seriousness of the crime.

A new class of judge will oversee those sentenced to public service.

Typically, those condemned to serve sentences without incarceration before have been sent to do farm labor, street cleaning or other menial labors, without regard for their educational qualifications.
