HAVANA, October 30 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba- Verdad / www.cubanet.org) -
Cuban Minister of Culture Abel Prieto has tried to resign his position twice,
according to a source in the Ministry of Education who asked not to be
identified.
Prieto, said the source, alleges health problems, but "it is not public
knowledge that he is ill."
Cuban leader Fidel Castro has twice refused to accept Prieto's resignation,
saying this is not a good time for changes in the Ministry, but nevertheless
rumors are beginning to circulate concerning possible replacements.
The strongest candidates mentioned are Carlos Martí, president of the
National Union of Writers and Artists, Rafael Acosta, who has occupied posts
with the Ministry of the Interior and the Cuban Institute of Cinematography, and
Soledad Cruz, a long-time culture official.
