HAVANA, July 26 (Víctor M. Domínguez, Lux Info Press /
www.cubanet.org) - Eight pavillions in the Julio Trigo teaching hospital, in the
Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, were closed this week for lack of nurses
to staff them.
In addition, the urology, proctology, and angiology services were merged
into one so that patients could be cared for by the remaining nursing staff.
"For months now this hospital has been having problems with nursing
personnel. Nursing students are working hard so that the problem doesnt
turn into chaos," said one doctor who did not want to be identified.
In the summer months, the Julio Trigo temporarily closes 50 percent of its
departments, in spite of the fact that the hospital serves one of the largest
municipalities in Havana.
The highest salary for Cuban nurses is 198 pesos a month, or 7.61 dollars at
the current exchange rate.
