HAVANA, February 21 (José Antonio Fornaris, Cuba-Verdad /
www.cubanet.org) More than 1,700,000 cubic meters of garbage and debris have
been picked up from the streets of Havana since the campaign against the Aedes
aegypti mosquito began more than a month ago.
This amounts to slightly over ¾ of a cubic meter of garbage for every
one of the citys 2,200,000 inhabitants.
The national television newscast on Wednesday announced that there are still
2,300 cubic meters of garbage to be picked up in the areas of Central Havana and
San Miguel del Padrón.
Originally, the government press had calculated that less than one million
cubic meters of refuse would be collected in the capital. It pointed to "social
indiscipline" on the part of the population for the accumulation.
Fumigation to eradicate mosquito breeding grounds has proceeded apace.
Recently sanitary authorities had said the mosquito, a vector for dengue and
yellow fevers, was widespread through the city, but they have not released any
more information since.
