HAVANA, February (www.cubanet.org) - Güines, a town of 80,000 just
south of Havana, is threatened by the many breeding grounds of the Aedes aegypti
mosquito found in the filthy ditches that long ago earned the town the nickname
of Venice of Cuba.
The water in the canals crisscrossing the town used to be clear; now the
canals have become drainage ditches fed by waste water.
It was approximately five years ago that the clear water turned into a
latrine, according to residents.
Since January, the government has been carrying out a campaign of garbage
pickup from the streets.
