PINAR DEL RIO, February 18 (Víctor Rolando Arroyo, UPECI /
www.cubanet.org) - Illegal fishing and the subsequent commerce in marine produce
was on the upswing during 2001 in the province.
More than 800 residents were fined for fishing [all fishing by private
citizens if illegal] and authorities confiscated more than 10 tons of marine
species caught by them.
"The situation is such that in this province, with miles and miles of
coastline, the local government is unable to supply fish for the population.
Consumers here have the right to buy 100 grams (less than four ounces) of
imported canned fish and 100 grams of fresh squid per month.
