(GUANTÁNAMO, February 13th) – Independent journalist Luis Torres Cardosa was arbitrarily arrested this past Tuesday, February 12th, at 6:00 o’clock in the morning at his home. He was taken away in patrol car # 158 and driven to Unit 1 of the National Revolutionary Police in the city of Guantánamo, and was interrogated by the police major known as Negret.

His arrest comes in response to the brave and humanitarian attitude of this defender of Human Rights, when on February 5th, he confronted officials from the provincial and municipality housing, trying to impede an eviction . Neighbors surrounding the area witnessing his brave attempt began to call more neighbors and in just a few minutes about 60 people were on his side. He is now accused of coercion against housing officials, and a fine of $2000 pesos, national currency was imposed pending the trial.

Meanwhile, Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, National Delegate of the Democratic Party 30th of November "Frank País", visited several units of the National Revolutionary Police, inquiring as to the arbitrary arrest of Torres Cardosa and he too was held for a few hours in the Department of Operations of the State Security by 1st Lieutenant Lamorut, who in cynical tones expressed to Castro de Lardiller that Torres Cardosa would be tried for the crimes of public disorder and disrespect to government officials.

It is no secret, that even if Luis Torres Cardosa pays the fine, he still will be condemned by a tribunal for the Department of the State Security wants to sentence this brave man.

(GUANTÁNAMO, February 14th)- Jorge Alvarez Sánchez, 31 years old political prisoner who is serving a 12-year sanction in Combinado de Guantánamo was brutally beaten on January 23rd, by Major Pablo Reyes Cobas, head of the Interior Order in the above-mentioned prison.

This criminal act was perpetrated in floor 2-A, and responds to the supposed pretext that this prisoner is the one taking out information from political prisoner Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina.

First Lieutenant Rogelio, also known as" El Chino", and several officials of the Interior Order also participated in this brutal beating.

Criminal acts against political prisoners happen on a daily basis in the prisons of the dictator Fidel Castro while he cynically proclaims that in Cuba Human Rights are respected.
