CIEGO DE AVILA, February 13 (Lexter Téllez, APLA / www.cubanet.org) -
Three students, one of whom has since died, were known to have come down with
meningitis at the agricultural polytechnic institute "Flores 2," in
Nuevitas, Camagüey province. It wasn't immediately clear whether the
students were afflicted with viral or bacterial meningitis.
The institute, with more than 100 live-in students, is located in a rural
setting, with its own water tank and pump.
"Frequently, the pump doesn't work because there is no electricity, and
the students bathe in the cistern," said Aristónica Hernández,
whose daughter is one of the students at Flores 2.
