HAVANA, February 12 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The 6,000
residents of the town of Santa Bárbara, in the Isle of Youth, south of
Cuba, have been without drinking water since the town's pump burned out 15 days
ago.
Officials of the Water and Sewer Company say they cannot repair the pump
because they don't have the wire they need. However, says Carlos Serpa, a local
resident, the wire is available in the dollar stores.
The town is about 12 miles from the island's capital, Nueva Gerona, and has
five doctor's and one dentist's offices, a clinical lab, an elementary school
and a bakery, all of whose services have been curtailed for lack of a dependable
water supply.
