Cuba Miami
(GUANTÁNAMO, February 10th) - "According to an information
received from Combinado de Guantánamo prison, the number of inmates
contaminated with
leptospirosis
-also known as 'rat fever'- has reached 100. This leads us to believe that
they have an uncontrollable epidemic in this penitentiary."- stated
Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, National Coordinator of COOSE.
"Asterio Bonne Díaz, a 26 year old prisoner is the latest
confirmed case. In recent days, he was taken to a punishment cell after
receiving a brutal beating at the hands of an officer that goes by the name of
Gerardo, all for reclaiming his right to be paroled"- added Castro de
Lardiller.
This illness is contracted as a result of the poor living conditions forced
upon the penal population as well as the lack of hygene, the little food offered
(sometimes decomposed) and the lack of medical attention provided.
Also stated in this report is the fact that in order to justify the denial
to provide medical attention to the prisoners, water is being introduced
intravenously in the prisoners system in a clear violation of medical
ethics as well as that of the Human Rights.
Reporting from the city of Guantánamo, Ferdinando Castro de
Lardiller, National Delegate of the Democratic Party November 30 "Frank País"
and Coordinator of the COOSE. For the Information Bridge Cuba Miami, given on
February 2002. |
