More than 100 stage civil disobedience event in Matanzas

HAVANA, February 5 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) - The political police forcefully broke up a prayer meeting by about 100 dissidents on Sunday, February 3 in Pedro Betancourt, Matanzas province.

"The event was held at the park in Pedro Betancourt," said Josefa López, a participant.

The event was conceived as a prayer chain by the Independent Movement Alternative Option.

"When the meeting was almost over, a number of agents of the Department of State Security, lead by an officer called Braulio Prieto, came in pushing and shoving and put an end to it," said López.

When the police came, the participants were praying for the triumph of love over hate, for the reconciliation of all Cubans, and for the liberation of all political prisoners.

"The brothers Ariel and Guido Sigler were arrested. They are the president and vice-president of the organization that sponsored the event. Their niece, Yanelis Junco Sigler, was hurt when agents twisted her arms," said López.

The Siglers have repeatedly been the victims of abuses by the political police and by the paramilitary Rapid Response Brigades.
