HAVANA, Feb. 4 (Luis Viño Zimerman, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) -
Secondary level schools in Centro Habana, Havana municipality, are requesting
help from parents, including money, revealed a source.
The campaing began January 30 with the intention of preventing the many
problems faced by the children in the so called "Schools on the field",
which is a 45 days mandatory period during which students must perform
agricultural labor.
The donations from parents will be used to repair shelters, which right now
lack electricity, and sanitary facilities, as well as fixing the bunks where the
children sleep. Some shelters, explained the schools' principal offices,
present roof, walls and doors damage.
According to these offices, the Ministry of Education doesn't have the
resources to carry on these needed repairs but it wont stop the program,
explained our sources.
"Your cooperation is necessary for the children to work in the least
minimal conditions", expressed Pedro Valdivia Huerta, principal at the "Sergio
González" school.
The fields where the children must work are located on farm cooperatives run
by the government. These farms pay the Ministry of Education for the work but
are not responsible for providing food and shelter. The children and their
families are not remunerate in any way.
