Blackout causes spoilage; townspeople irate

CAMAGÜEY, January 30 (Yoel Blanco García, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) - An electrical blackout resulted in the spoilage of 132 pounds of beef liver at a dollar store and the townspeople are irate.

"They would rather throw the meat away than offer it to the people at a reasonable price, or give it to the schools, or the old-folks homes," said one resident.

The man’s comment refers to the fact that the liver was selling at the "La Caribeña" dollar store, in Florida municipality, Camagüey province, at 1.25 dollars a pound, or about 32.50 pesos. Many Cubans don’t have access to dollars, and can’t afford to buy meat at 32.50 pesos a pound on an average salary of less than 250 pesos a month.
