Leaking ammonia frightens residents

CAMAGUEY, Cuba, Dec. 27 (Enrique Lopez, CPIC / www.cubanet.org) – Ammonia escaping from an ice plant frightened residents of the municipality of Florida the night of December 22.

Residents were reminded of a similar ammonia leak September 22 of last year which caused an evacuations of the area.

"This time the ammonia escape was smaller," said a resident named Alexis, "but we’re terrorized by the repetition of these events. We fear that a major escape will have fatal consequences for the residents of Florida."

Another resident, who identified himself as Chorizo, said the tubing in the ice plant dates from before 1970 and is subject to leaks.
