Dozens won’t vote in next election

HAVANA, December 18 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - Dozens of people in San Nicolás de Bari, Havana province, have said they will refuse to vote in elections set for January 10, 2003, because they can’t get to the polls since the bridge linking the town to nearby Güines collapsed seven months ago.

The bus service to and from the town has not been running since the bridge collapsed.

Leonel Pineda, 65, who has been living in the area since 1945, said: "They can forget about me. I have brought up the bridge matter four times and nothing’s been done. All government higher-ups are the same, decorative figures."

Amparo Díaz, 21, has to walk two miles to get to the cooperative where she works. She said: "I’m not going to vote. They don’t do anything for the people, and I don’t care what they are going to do to me."
