GUINES, December 18 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
- Several dissidents in Güines, a town south of Havana, delivered a letter
December 11 at the offices of the Local Assembly of the Popular Power (local
government) asking that the local radio station give details about the Varela
Project.
The letter, addressed to Lidia María Rodríguez, the towns
representative to the National Assembly of the Popular Power, demands that the
Department of State Security cease harassing those participating in collecting
signatures or other activities related to the Project.
The Varela Project is a grassroots initiative thats trying to bring
about political change in the island within the confines of the
CubanConstitution. Initially, the Project delivered a petition, signed by more
than 11,000 people, asking for elections on some matters. The government has, so
far, ignored the Project, refusing to abide by the document, which is legal
under the Constitution.
