HOLGUÍN, December 11 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org ) -
Residents of Moa, a mining community in eastern Holguín province,
protested widely at the beginning of the month when they could not buy their
allotments of staple foods on the first of the month.
On the last day of November, people lined up during the night, as is the
custom here, to wait for grocery stores to dispense rationed food items. When
the stores opened in the morning, however, employees announced they had no
orders to sell because shipments of items such as rice and beans were not in
yet.
Faced with widely spread protests, local government officials ordered
emergency shipments to the stores, which remained open until 2:00 p.m. to sell
each elegible customer 5 pounds of rice, 5 pounds of sugar, and 10 ounces of
beans, their allotment for the month.
