Local officials disregard order to close polluting ice-making plant

GÜINES, December 11 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org) - Popular Power (local government) and Communist Party officials in Güines, a small city south of Havana, have so far refused to close a polluting ice-making plant, in contravention of an order from the Ministry of Internal Commerce.

The ice plant, sited by the Mayabeque river, is over 50 years old and continually discharges ammonia into the atmosphere. In August, a team of refrigeration specialists from the Ministry ordered its permanent closure due to the deterioration of the refrigerant pipes in the plant.
