HAVANA, December 11 (Ernesto Roque, CPI / www.cubanet.org) -
Recently-released human rights activist Oscar Elías Biscet will be tried
for attempting against the public order, according to police prosecutor José
Ángel Aguilera.
Biscet, who was released from prison October 31 after serving a three-year
sentence for flying the Cuban flag upside down, was arrested December 6 at a
human rights demonstration in the Lawton neighborhood of Havana. The
demonstration ended in a melee after police charged the crowd with their night
sticks and arrested 17. Ten of those were released two days ago, after being
fined 30 pesos for public disorder.
Three more were released yesterday, leaving Biscet and Virgilio Marante,
Orlando Zapata, and Raúl Arencibia. All four will be tried together,
according to police.
