HAVANA, Dec. 10 (Hector Maseda, Grupo Decoro / www.cubanet.org)
Independent journalist Ana Leonor Diaz Chamizo was held for 10 hours December 5
and Jose Izquierdo Hernandez was threatened by political police a day earlier.
Diaz Chamizo was taken from her home in the capital at 6:30 a.m. and taken
to the Department of State Security where she was interrogated. Two lieutenants
who identified themselves as Jesus and Manuel said they wanted to have a "friendly
chat" with her. She was released at 4:30 p.m.
Police in the municipality of Guines, in Havana province, went to the home
of Izquierdo Hernandez and threatened to jail him if he participated in and
reported on Santa Barbara religious acts and festivities scheduled for later
that day. When he showed up at the event, the journalist said he was insulted
with "obscene words" by more than a dozen agents.
Human rights activists in Nueva Gerona, on the Isle of Youth in Havana
province, asked for the freeing of four independent journalists jailed by
police. The four were Lexter Tellez Castro, Bernardo Arevalo Padron, Carlos
Alberto Dominguez and Carlos Brizuela.
