HAVANA, Dec. 5 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) Residents
of El Cristo in Santiago de Cuba province say they are tired of telling local
authorities about the excessive sale of alcoholic drinks that many claim is
behind an increase in violent acts.
"The Gastronomy Company sells an abundant amount of rum and beer to
meet targets of the technical-economic plan," said Raul Corellas, a
resident of El Cristo.
Corona said that beer is sold in bulk quantities from mobile units stationed
in parks and on the towns streets. "A glass of 250 milliliters sells
for three pesos," he said. "Although its of poor quality and is
often diluted with water those who drink it in great quantities get drunk.
Concluded Corona: "Once drunk, the people find many excuses to fight
and injury themselves with knives. Theres no respect. Theres no
water and not enough food but theres rum and beer in excess. The worst is
the police never appear in time to stop the violence. You dont see the
police or anyone else stopping the fights.
