HAVANA - Cuba is celebrating three decades of relations with fellow
Caribbean nations by inviting leaders of the region to a weekend summit in
Havana.
Heads of state or government from the Caribbean Community were invited to
the event Saturday and Sunday. "Practically all of them have confirmed"
that they will come, Ricardo Cabrisas, Cuba's minister of government, told a
news conference on Wednesday.
Cabrisas said 14 heads of state were invited but the community has 15
members. Spokesmen for the Foreign Ministry said they were not immediately sure
if the discrepancy was due to a slip of the tongue or if one country was not
invited.
The leaders were to discuss the future of the region whose countries,
Cabrisas noted, share common problems in issues such as tourism, the battle
against narcotics traffic and dealing with a sluggish world economy.
Cabrisas praised the Caricom members for their "open, diaphanous and
brave" opposition to the U.S. embargo of the socialist island.
