Violence on the increase in Guantanamo province

HAVANA, Dec. 4 (Fara Armenteros, UPECI / www.cubanet.org) – Residents in Guantanamo province report an increase of violent acts such as murders, robberies and street fights they say are being ignored by the authorities despite the fact military units are being strengthened.

Two weeks ago Jane Formen Frometa, 15, and Lituania Diaz, 23, were forced under threat of death to give their mountain bikes to thieves.

"The situation has become very difficult," Formen Frometa said. "You can’t go out on the street."

Carlos Garcia Medina, a 17-year-old pre-university student, was recently stabbed to death by a fellow student. Garcia Medeina’s relatives said the two had earlier had a fight.

Alberto Martinez Fernandez, who presides over the Guanatanamo Club of Political Prisoners, said the police are known to commit violent acts. He said a youth named Rooney Olivares was beaten by police and held in jail for five days because he was collecting signatures for the Varela Project.
