No funds to pay pensioners

HAVANA, November 29 (Víctor M. Domínguez, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - At least one post office in Bayamo, eastern Cuba, has no funds to cash pensioners’ checks and many have been sleeping outside the building in the hope the money will come in.

One of the retirees, Juan González, 82, said there isn’t much he can do with his 79 peso (just under 3 dollars) pension, but that at least it lets him eat something hot.

Dozens of pensioners have been waiting for more than 15 days now. Some try to make ends meet by buying and selling sundries in the streets, but even that can be of little comfort.

Aida Pupo, 68, said they have nothing to sell, and in any case, if they are found trying to sell something, they are fined 1,500 pesos. "Just imagine, I’d prefer to starve out here in the streets than in a jail. They don’t respect age when it comes to locking you up."
