Radio announcer among those who sought asylum in Canada

HOLGUIN, Cuba, August 27 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) - Laritza Montes de Oca, a 26-year-old journalist and announcer at the Ecos de Sagua radio station, was among 23 young Cubans who defected in Canada during the Second World Catholic Youth Conference in Toronto, Canada, last month.

Montes de Oca was a militant in the Communist Party who covered politics and recreation for the radio station.

"Why did she put aside her university degree, her job, her ideas, her country and her socialism?" asked one neighbor in Sagua de Tanamo, where she lived.
