Government crackdown on private food stores

HAVANA, August 27 (Armando Soler/www.cubanet.org) - Mayra Donet and Jorge Navarro have been fined 20,000 pesos ($US769.23) for the illicit sale of food, the latest in a series of crackdowns by the government on private entrepreneurs.

The pair live at Milagros 361 in the Havana district of Santos Suarez, where it is estimated that between 70 and 90 percent of private businesses that sold food have been closed.

The lawyer hired by the couple said that there the Oficina Nacional de Adminstración Tributaria (ONAT) has no proof of an illegal operation. But, he added, "ONAT never loses."
