VILLA CLARA, August 15 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - Rafael Perenzuela Lorenzo, 48, cannot rebuild his house,
damaged by hurricane Lili six years ago, because municipal officials refuse to
sell him scarce construction materials due to his opposition to the government.
The materials have been made available to other victims of the hurricane in
the area, but Perenzuela says the local government delegate, a man he knows only
as Villafaña, told him that due to his political ideas and to his not
having signed the recent Constitutional petition to make Socialism permanent in
the island, the municipal government had decided not to sell him or make
available to him any supplies to repair his house.
Perenzuela was recently fired from his job in the local fishing fleet. Now
he gets by painting signs and decorating private commercial establishments.
The idea of favoring adherents and punishing opponents of the government is
not new in Cuba. Most recently, there was a nationwide campaign that required
people to establish their Revolutionary bona fides in order to decide who would
be allowed to buy one of a shipment of Chinese-made TV sets.
