GÜINES, August 14 (José Izquierdo, Grupo Decoro /
www.cubanet.org) - A man and a woman were rolled as they slept in front of a
store in Güines, a town south of Havana, August 9.
Guillermo Gil Almeida, 42, and his sister, Rosa Girasena, 47, were robbed of
their meager belongings. They were sleeping in the porch of the Panorama
dollar-denominated store. The two had been spending nights there since their
former home in the Vega Prieta farm collapsed during a storm April 28, 2001.
Townspeople donated some clothing, food, and money to the couple when they
learned of the incident. The two are well known since they get by selling odds
and ends in the streets of Güines.
The man and woman have been waiting for over a year for the construction of
a housing development near the municipal cigar factory, but the work is mired in
bureaucratic delays. Similar projects have taken as long as 20 years to
complete.
