HAVANA, August 9 (Víctor Manuel Domínguez, Lux Info Press /
www.cubanet.org) - About 15 fishermen from the Cuban fishing fleet who had been
assigned to repair a primary school walked off the job last Tuesday when they
were told that during their 12 hour shift they would only be provided with a
strong snack.
The fishermen, about half of a 30 man contingent of idled fishermen, had
been repairing the "Manuel Ascunce" primary school in Old Havana. When
they reported to work at 4 p.m., for a shift that was to last until 4 a.m., they
were told there would be no meals supplied to them.
One of the men, who didn't want his name used, said, "In addition to
taking us out of the jobs for which we are qualified, they bring us to this hell
without proper working clothes, gloves, and shoes, and, to boot, little food, of
poor quality, and we are not even assured of that."
"If there are no ships, let them make us fish in the river, but to
bring us here to do a shoddy jot is ridiculous," said the fisherman, who
explained he was a refrigeration technician in a ship that will never sail
again.
