HOLGUÍN, August 5 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO / www.cubanet.org) -
Residents of Sagua de Tánamo, Holguín province, have been paying
for municipal water service they haven't been getting for a month while local
aqueduct officials throw their hands up and say the town's main pump is broken.
"They charge us and they don't provide the service. They can't make
repairs and they won't buy a new pump. What are we paying for?" said one
local woman.
"People are irritated and they complain, but to no avail," said
another resident who did not want to give his name.
An official at the provincial waterworks explained by telephone: "The
breakdown of the pump that supplies the main tank is the cause of the problem,
since that pump has been in service for more than 25 years, and the local and
municipal governments are aware of the problem but the solution is out of their
hands for the time being."
