HAVANA, August 5 (Juan Carlos Linares, Cuba-Verdad / www.cubanet.org) - A
project to make cellular phones accessible to Cuban nationals in the island was
postponed by government orders, said an employee of Cubacel, the
government-operated cell phone provider.
"No one knows when the project will be reactivated, if it ever is,"
said the employee, who asked to remain anonymous.
Up to the present, Cubacel has been providing cell phone service to certain
government officials, and to foreign businessmen and visitors who can pay for
the service in dollars at rates that would be exorbitant to island residents.
The project to extend service to Cubans, which had been a year in the
planning, was estimated to have served 50,000 users initially. The Cubacel
employee said the telephone receivers had already arrived and are stored in
warehouses.
