HOLGUIN, June 21 (Juan Carlos Garcell, APLO) - Omar Wilson Estévez, a
resident of Moa, in eastern Holguín province, says he saw Lt. Mellina,
the sector police chief, confiscate all the produce being offered by vendors on
the bridge from Moa to Coloradas on April 29.
"He just loaded everything into his personal jeep and left," says
Estévez. He adds, "No one knows what he did with so much
merchandise, because he didn't arrest anybody, he didn't fine anybody, and he
certainly didn't give anyone a receipt for the confiscated goods."
Several residents say that similar police operations happen frequently in
the town. "Confiscation is the principal repressive action against the
vendors," says Estévez.
